Are DiamondBack Tonneau Covers Worth it?

DiamondBack Tonneau Covers are perhaps the most widely recognized brand of heavy-duty tonneau cover on the market. But, just like in high school, popularity doesn’t necessarily equate quality. With such a big investment, you may be asking yourself, are DiamondBack Tonneau Covers worth it?

Sure, the DiamondBack Cover is offers high weight-bearing capacity, various resilient finishes, and great accessories. But before you click “Add to Cart,”  it could be that another cover is better suited to meet your needs.

Weight-Bearing Tonneau Cover

The DiamondBack HD Tonneau Cover is the only DiamondBack model that provides a substantial load-bearing capacity. While the HD can take on up to 1,600 lbs., it’s important to note that DiamondBack’s other covers can only bear 400 distributed pounds.

Though DiamondBack is the industry standard for weight-bearing tonneau covers, it is not the leader. Rather, Renegade’s Tonneau Cover hauls up to 2,000 pounds on top! This not only removes any doubt you had about your cover’s strength, but opens the door to a variety of additional activities and uses.

Versatile Design

Turning to DiamondBackSE, Diamondback270, and Diamondback180, for those truck owners okay with a low weight-bearing capacity, you’ll find a slight variation in access panels, but none provide full access to the entire truck bed. You only get this with Renegade’s tri-fold design.

Each of the DiamondBack models include locks and hinges on top of the cover, and might even include cleats. This has a tough, rugged look, but they keep you from being able to utilize your cover as a flatbed. This might not seem like a big deal…until you want to smoothly slide an item onto your tonneau cover (like a sheet of plywood) or when you load a pallet on it and it doesn’t sit flush on top. These are issues you won’t run into with your Renegade Cover’s smooth surface.

Additionally, when you’re installing or removing your new cover, if it’s a Renegade, you won’t need any tools. Relatedly, don’t forget the DiamondBack design is higher profile than Renegade’s, at 2.75″ compared to Renegade which is 1.5″. DiamondBackHD also has a total of 4 locking pins, making it less secure than the 8 pins on the Renegade.

As far as build quality, the DiamondBack has tack welded cross members underneath, and exposed welds on the top of the cover. The Renegade is friction stir welded along the entirety of the cover.

Tonneau Cover Accessories

Whether you have a DiamondBack Tonneau Cover or Renegade Tonneau Cover, there is a wide array of accessories at your disposal. However, if you have a DiamondBack, you’ll need to permanently drill into your cover.

On the other hand, Renegade has a unique integrated L-Track system that provides you with a simple way to connect unlimited accessories via the Threaded Stud Attachments. These allow you to add Renegade Hooks, Aero Bars, Renegade Racks, Headache Racks, or your favorite accessory from another manufacturer.

Renegade stands apart from the crowd, offering a legitimate DiamondBack cover alternative. After all, both DiamondBack and Renegade tonneau covers boast key features, useful for various applications. DiamondBack vs. Renegade: How Are They Different?

DiamondBack Cover

DiamondBack Design

The DiamondBack Cover is made with an aluminum diamond plating construction and covered with a rough bedliner material. DiamondBack has hinges on top of the cover so it is not a flat top. Tie downs and accessories also protrude on top of the cover. The height of the DiamondBack cover is about 2.75 inches measured from the top of the bed rail, excluding any hardware or accessories.

DiamondBack Build Quality

In terms of build quality, the DiamondBack Cover has external welds and keyed locks in the front and back to access the bed. There are 2 pins that engage for each of the 2 locks on this model for a total of 4 locking pins. Inside the DiamondBack cover, they’ve tack welded the cross member support bars to the cover.

DiamondBacks’ premium model can hold up to 1,600 lbs. on top of the bed cover. As for sealing, the cover comes with a tall profile soft EPDM seal and has good water resistance capabilities.

DiamondBack Functionality

Upon unlocking and opening the DiamondBack cover, the struts lift and keep the cover sections open. Since it doesn’t fold on top of itself, it can prevent you from accessing the full truck bed.

You can remove each of the two clamshell panels of the cover by unhooking the struts and sliding them off. The middle section is not removable without tools. You can access about 1/3 of the end of the bed with the cover open and you can’t haul something too tall because of the clam section of the cover.

Renegade Cover

Renegade Design

Similar to the DiamondBack Cover, the Renegade Cover is made with an aluminum diamond plating construction. However, Renegade’s bed lining is in the middle of the section, with powder-coated edges, and an L-track.

The Renegade Cover is about 1.5 inches tall, and overall has a cleaner appearance than the DiamondBack. It has a flat top without accessories attached, since the hardware providing its functionality is streamlined on the underside. This opens up the space on top of your truck bed cover for a variety of applications.

The Renegade cover also has an integrated L-track, compatible with all of the Renegade accessories (and most from other companies by using a Threaded Stud Attachment) for added functionality and security. You can attach anchors or create an overland system by adding accessories like the Renegade Racks. Other accessories include Aero Bars and Headache Stops

Renegade Build Quality

Renegade Covers are designed without external welds, and have a keyless security mechanism. There is a rail system with 8 pins that engage to keep the cover secured to the truck bed. The support beams underneath the cover are friction stir welded across the entire width of the bed cover.

As opposed to the DiamondBack, Renegade Covers can hold up to 2,000 lbs. In addition, the Renegade cover uses a firm low profile P seal which has good water resistance capabilities.

Renegade Functionality

The Renegade Cover allows for a richer diversity of uses, when compared to the DiamondBack. For example, you can unlock the tailgate end by about 2 feet and have no height restrictions, then fold open the cover further to get 4 feet of access to your truck bed.

The cab section of the cover can also be opened independently. Plus, the entire Renegade cover removes easily with no tools by folding it into thirds, releasing the cab pins, and lifting it off the bed.
